Ah...the Library
I had forgotten what a wonderful, magical, splendid (etc...) place this was! Amanda, I am ashamed to say I have not set foot in a public library since probably the beginning of 2008. And even then, it was rare. But, ah! What a joy I've rediscovered it! Maybe I needed to have a baby to renew my love for the smell of library books and the excitement of the hunt for the perfect story.
Nathan and I both got library cards today for the Lacey Timberland Library. I think I probably beamed once I held my library card in my hand (Nathan was already off on his hunt and wasn't there for me to ask). I eagerly went to the children's section in search for the perfect board books for Steven (the only books he doesn't tear to shreds). I found a decent selection (including Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann and Moo, Baa, Lalala by Sandra Boynton - she's a favorite!) and put a few in the basket. Then I decided to try my hand at those parenting books I've so sorely neglected since Steven was born (I more prefer the mommy wisdom I glean from other mommies, but sometimes you just need a book). I picked up a book on baby sleeping habits (a favorite topic of mine lately...) and a 100 ways to play with your baby book (singing the same baby song over and over while bouncing may be exciting for Steven but I could use some variety...). I perused the cookbook selection almost taking a Julia Child book home with me, but I'm not quite in a cooking mood yet - maybe come fall. So began the hunt for a book for me to read (you know, not just flip through...and something with more than one syllable words and colors and shapes). I picked up A Virtuous Woman by Kaye Gibbons. I've read another of her books, Charms for the Easy Life, and really enjoyed her writing style. We'll see what this one is like. I didn't want to go overboard on books for me to read right now as my time is limited with a 6 month old and things that must be done when he isn't requiring my attention (cleaning, laundry, cooking, all those lovely housewife duties - haha - sleeping...etc). There are also a couple books I'm already working my way through and didn't want to overwork the brain too much. I'm already exploring the library's website for more books to put on my "too read" list. Any recommendations? Send them my way!
Now that my love of the library has been renewed, I am looking forward to semi-monthly trips with Steven so he gets well acquainted with the hunt for and the smell of a good library book.

Hooray for the library! I love the board books you chose-- I actually read both of those at storytime this week! I think one of the best things about the library is that you can check out whatever you want, and if you don't like it, it doesn't matter-- it was free!
ReplyDeleteDoes that library do story time? My kids LOVE going every week for story time. Ours is on a break for summer but will start again in the fall.
ReplyDeleteSandra Boynton books are great! Parker loves the Barnyard Dance and I like the Going to Bed Book. The Lacey library has tons of fun stuff for kids. We take Parker there about once a month. If you find any "open-the-flap" books with the flaps missing, they might be at our house. :)
