Thirty Days of Thankfulness ~ Day 4 ~ Comfort
God's attributes are endless. Whatever season of life we find ourselves in, there is a facet to God's character that we can relate to and come to a better understanding of who He is. When we desire to know God more intimately we often pursue the areas that make us feel great, that would match up with what we'd associate with good circumstances - we want to know His joy, His goodness, His love, His power, His might. But to know God intimately, there are often things we have to go through that are unpleasant, that without those experiences, would not give us as full of a picture of who He is.
I had been taught so many of God's attributes growing up. Even though my head knew, my heart had not learned them. I hadn't experienced God in all those ways. It didn't change my belief, but the depth of my understanding was oh so shallow. Not until I walked through the pain of infertility, followed by the pain of miscarriage years later, did I come to fully understand who God as my comforter is. It was in those moments of not being able to find relief from the depth of my pain from any worldly offering that I was able to find my comfort in the arms of Jesus.
Our God in being our comfort is the only one who in the midst of all the why's and uncertainties of our situations, can bring peace and calm to our hearts. He is the only one who can give us hope in the midst of insurmountable trials, and the only one, who when we are faced with death or dying in some form, can give the promise of new life and life forevermore with Him - not here on earth, but in the perfect heaven He has waiting for us.
To know God as comforter truly offers an even greater understanding of the depth of His character. Would I have chosen the reasons for why I know Him as comforter? Certainly not! Yet, I am thankful, that as His word promises, He works all things for the good of those who love Him, so he would take the saddest most broken part of my life and use it to draw me closer to Him, to call me unto himself.
In what ways has God used the difficult circumstances of your life to reveal His comfort towards you?
