30 Days of Thankfulness ~ C & D are for Coffee & Donuts
Sweet treats - I live for them. I'm not talking candy...I'm talking all things pastry - baked and fried. I have a bumper sticker on my awesome minivan that proclaims "Donuts Make People Happy" - because, they do. I have probably earned at least 20 free drinks from Starbucks this year already...not that I am proud of that - because Starbucks is Starbucks and I prefer the best coffee that coffee snobbery can buy. But, I have five kids, so coffee in all forms and usually in moments of desperation usually trump snobbish preferences.
I swear I begin mourning and sink into deep depression for at least a week (okay, probably longer) each time I am diagnosed with gestational diabetes. People know I am very strict with my diet when I am pregnant (so that I can avoid having a fourteen pound baby). The one thing I was unable to resist this last pregnancy - donuts. I passed up cake, cookies, pie, but put me in a donut shop and I didn't leave without having had at least two. I sincerely love those delightful bites of confectionery genius.
The thing I love most about coffee & donuts though, and what makes me so thankful for their invention, is how both bring people together. How often in our culture do we casually say to someone we haven't seen in a while, "Let's grab a cup of coffee sometime!" Or, especially in my mommy world, "Let's have a playdate - I have coffee!" And I'm sure it is rare for someone to buy a dozen donuts with the intent to eat them all alone (I need at least three people to share a box of donuts with - 12 donuts divided 4 ways equals 3 donuts per person which amounts to perfection).
Coffee evokes feelings of warmth, comfort, friendship and hospitality to me. Donuts make me want to laugh out loud, do silly things (to match the sprinkles and unique flavors) and make joyful memories with the people I love. I have often celebrated one of my children's half/month/week birthdays with donuts. I have often supplied a coffee pick me up to dear girlfriends frazzled out of their minds by their children while said children play with my children who very likely have driven me up the wall.
Coffee and donuts are practically pillars in my little society and I am thankful for them. Now, I think I'll go make myself a later afternoon latte.
