30 Days of Thankfulness ~ Day 21

We spent most of the day outside in the crisp November sunshine. There
were leaves that needed raked and Christmas lights to be out up. I did
very little of the work, have to give most of that credit to my
husband, but I had fun playing with my kiddos and had a big pot of
chili as our reward for dinner.

After dinner I got an unexpected phone call from my Grandma. I've been
thinking about her a lot lately. I miss her. She and my Grandpa live
in Duluth, MN and I haven't been back there since Bradley was still a
baby. They've been out to visit a few times since then and that has
been marvelous. The last time I saw my Grandma she came out to take
care of me after we lost Shiloh. I don't know how I would have gotten
by without her. She was incredible.

I've always been close to my grandparents. I have fond memories of
living in Minnesota and going to their house for special overnights
with my brothers, or just me. Grandma always had cookies or some sweet
treat for us. Grandpa always had mints that he would pull from behind
our ear like "magic". They taught us our first card games and they fed
us our first fresh caught fried fish. They also gave me my first bite
of Jello when I was just a few weeks old!

I spent a couple of summers going on special trips with just my
Grandma "down home" to where my great grandparents lived. We would
visit my great-aunt's farm, visit my other aunt on the river where we
once helped harvest her rhubarb, and always we'd feed the ducks at the
park by my great-grandma Brake's house. My love for old country music
came from those 4 hour car rides, listening to Randy Travis on
cassette - and there was almost always a stop for an ice cream from
Dairy Queen along the way. A couple of times my grandpa and my brother
Kenny would tag along on these trips, too, but there was something
special about the trips with just my grandma.

My grandpa loved to take us fishing with him. It meant really early,
really cold mornings on some of the many Minnesota lakes in his boat.
My first full cup of black coffee was on that boat. I was so icy cold
and he had a hot thermos of it. I was desperate to keep warm so down
the hatch it went. It did the trick although it is only recently that
I've been drinking my coffee regularly without cream or sugar - I must
be growing up!

I have so, so many fond memories where they are at the center. I'm
thankful for each and every one. My kiddos have loved getting to know
their great grandparents in "Minnemsota". I'm thankful they too will
have wonderful memories of my grandparents. I'm eager to create more
memories with them soon! For now, phone conversations, emails and
Skype will have to do.

Love you Grandpa & Grandma!
